Sten Orrenius, Lester Packer, Enrique Cadenas
R5,534 Discovery Miles 55 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Mitochondria have traditionally been associated with metabolic functions; however recent research has uncovered a central role for these organelles in cell signaling, cell survival, and cell death. Mitochondrial dysfunction is a factor in a myriad of pathophysiological conditions, including age-related neurodegenerative disorders, cancer, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. Mitochondrial Signaling in Health and Disease examines themes essential for the maintenance of the mitochondrial redox (reduction-oxidation) energy axis.

With contributions from an impressive cadre of internationally recognized scientists, the book discusses coordinated mitochondrial functions that regulate cell function by discrete signaling pathways. Topics discussed include:

  • Electron transport and energy production
  • Mitochondrial biogenesis and dynamics
  • Mitochondrial signaling
  • Apoptosis and autophagy
  • Pharmacology signaling
  • Epigenetic signaling: mitochondrial methylation and acetylation reactions

An essential resource for life and health scientists as well as pharmaceutical industry professionals, this volume highlights the importance of mitochondrial signaling and its role in establishing a harmonized communication between several cellular compartments. The information in this volume is critical to those developing mitochondrion-targeted therapies aimed at assuaging mitochondrial dysfunction or the specific factors contributing to its dysfunction.

Micronutrients and Brain Health addresses cutting-edge research related to processes of oxidative stress that affect brain function, an area of increasing significance for those concerned and involved with public health and translational medicine. Edited by four leading micronutrient researchers, the book brings together the investigative work of more than 70 leading researchers from across the world. Chapters identify brain-specific micronutrients that support function as well as the molecular mechanisms underlying their neuroprotectant activity. These explore age-related metabolic pathways, mitochondrial nutrients, neurodegeneration and micronutrients, cell signaling, and neuronal functions. General chapters are included on brain structure, function, and metabolism, while several other chapters are devoted to the role of specific micronutrients. The book explores how brain micronutrients are found to be both metabolic and redox regulators, thereby establishing a cross-talk between the major pathways involved in modulation of cell signaling and gene expression. Specific areas of research covered include: Uses of nutritional interventions to target age-related neuronal and behavioral deficits Effects of various micronutrients on Alzheimer's disease, including lipoic acid, green tea, and Ginkgo biloba extracts Nutrients specific to essential mitochondrial functions Cognitive and behavioral consequences of iron deficiency with specific emphasis on women of reproductive age Omega-3 fatty acids and their relation to brain function in the elderly Challenges inherent in the development of neuroprotective-neurorescue drugs This book belongs to the groundbreaking CRC Press Series on Oxidative Stress and Disease. The series now includes more than two dozen volumes that address increasing evidence regarding the multiple ways that oxidative stress initiates and accelerates disease mechanisms. Most importantly, this book, like the series, offers invaluable information regarding nutritional and lifestyle choices, and pharmaceutical interventions that can be employed to prevent, control, and even ameliorate disease processes attributed to oxidative stress.

R1,666 Discovery Miles 16 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A NATO Advanced Study Institute on "New Developments and Methods in Membrane Research and Biological Energy Transduction" was held in order to consider some of the most recent developments in membrane research methodologies and results, with particular emphasis on studies of biological energy transduction. The partic ipants in the Institute dealt with three general areas of membrane study: membrane structure (with emphasis on lipid and protein components), membrane component assembly (with particular emphasis on mitochondria and chloroplasts), and the specialized functions of certain membrane systems. This last area included discussions of topics such as drug transformation, the role of membrane electron transport in the generation of oxygen radicals, the effect of oxygen radicals on cellular homeostasis and on the structure, organization and function of the acetylcholine receptor. Lectures and posters were concerned with two central questions: what is the function of membrane structure in energy transduction and how can energy trans duction be effectively measured and assessed? This text presents the content of the major lectures and important posters presented during the Institute's program. In issuing this book, the editor hopes to convey the proceedings of the Institute to a larger audi ence and to offer a comprehensive account of those developments in membrane research that were considered on the Island of Spetsai between August 16 and August 29, 1984. Mulchand S Patel, Lester Packer
R1,996 Discovery Miles 19 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The recognition of oxidative stress as a major factor in health, aging, and disease has led to a surge in research aimed at uncovering effective countermeasures in the form of antioxidants. Unique in its two-fold protective function, alpha-lipoic acid has drawn unprecedented interest as a coenzyme in mitochondrial energy metabolism and as an antioxidant and cell redox modulator. Mounting data regarding its potential health benefits demands an authoritative, single-source reference to codify current knowledge and guide future research. A state-of-the-science compilation, Lipoic Acid follows the history of this potent coenzyme and the latest discoveries regarding the chemistry, biological action, and significance in energy production, antioxidant activity, and health. The book is divided into three sections: * Section I: Discovery and Molecular Structure reviews the early studies leading to the discovery of alpha-lipoic acid and explains the molecular structure, biosynthesis, and the characterization of lipoic acid and its chemical derivatives. * Section II: Metabolic Aspects describes in detail the human pharmacokinetics of alpha-lipoic acid including the lipoic acid-derived dehydrogenase complexes and their roles in energy metabolism. It also explains antioxidant activity and redox modulation and how lipoic acid induces Phase II detoxification enzymes through activation of Nrf2-dependent gene expression. * Section III Clinical Aspects discusses enzyme deficiency disorders and the effects of lipoic acid on insulin. It defines lipoic acid influence on signaling pathways and AMP-activated kinase, and considers the therapeutic implications for treatment of metabolic syndromes and the improvement of mitochondrial function by lipoic acid supplementation. Twenty years ago, the enzyme superoxide dismutase which uses the superoxide radical anion as its specific substrate was reported. With this discovery was born a new scientific field, in which oxygen, necessary for aerobi c 1 ife on thi s planet, had to be cons i dered also in terms of its toxicity and stresses. This stimulated the search for knowledge of active oxygen species in biology and medicine. Superoxide and other reactive oxygen species are now implicated in many disease processes. Major advances have been achieved during these past years with respect to free radical generation and mechanisms of free radical action in causing tissue injury. In parallel, the possibil ity of influencing free radical related disease processes by antioxidant treatment was studied in various in vitro and in vivo systems. This was the unique theme of a conference organized in Paris by the Society for Free Radical Research (December 9-10, 1988) which brought together experts from basic sciences and clinicians in order to evaluate the current status of antioxidant therapy. The conference emphasized fundamental processes in antioxidant action. Among the major topics were superoxide dismutase (SOD) and low molecular weight substances with such activity, called SOD mimics. Other antioxidant enzymes were also considered. Antioxidant vitamins, in particular vitamins E and C, other naturally occurri ng antioxidants and vari ous synthet i c antioxidants were included in the presentations as there is now a rapidly developing series of compounds with potentially interesting clinical applications.

R3,012 Discovery Miles 30 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Molecular Mechanisms of Transcellular Signaling: from the Membrane to the Gene" was held on the Island of Spetsai, Greece, from August 15- 27, 1994. The aim of this Institute was to bring together researchers in the field of signal transduction mechanisms, transcription factors and gene regulation with those actively involved in studies on the implications of oxygen radicals and antioxidant defence mechanisms for cell function. As diverse as these fields may be, the emergence of their interconnection during the course of the Institute was an eye-opener for students and lecturers alike. 2 Presentations and discussions focussed on the role of Ca +, G-proteins, protein kinase C and phospholipases in signaling mechanisms. These broad principles were extended to transcription factors and gene regulation with an emphasis on the steroid hormone receptor superfamily and NFKB. Basic principles of free radical formation and antioxidant action (vitamin E and C) were presented and discussed in connection with effects on signaling pathways. This book present the content of the major lectures and a selection of the most relevant posters. These proceedings offer a comprehensive account of the most important topics discussed at the Institute. The book is intended to make the proceedings accessible to a large audience.

Lester Packer, Leonid Prilipko
R2,934 Discovery Miles 29 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Free radicals appear to play a mojor role in many neurological (and non neurological) dieseases. Both acute and degenerative disorders are thought to involve free radicals reactions in tissue injury (for a list see this book page 18). This issue is very important for basic science and for therapeuthic approach as well. In order to review and discuss the place of free radicals in psychiatry and neurology, a joint meeting was initiated by the World Health Organization and the Fondation Ipsen in Paris on June 17-18,1991. This book contains the papers presented during this meeting. Although the papers included in this volume have been produced in the framework of WHO/Fondation Ipsen review of knowledge about free radicals and brain disorders, they express the views of the individual authors rather than a consensus of the participants at the meeting. They do not necessarily represent the decision or stated policy of the World Health Organiszation or the Fondation Ipsen. The editors wish to express their appreciation to Mrs Mervaillie for the organization of the meeting and Mrs M.-L. Gage for her editorial assis tance. L. Packer, L. Bioradicals Detected by ESR Spectroscopy (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1995): Hiroaki Ohya-Nishiguchi,... Bioradicals Detected by ESR Spectroscopy (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1995)
Hiroaki Ohya-Nishiguchi, Lester Packer
R1,590 Discovery Miles 15 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is based on two keywords: Bioradical and ESR. Bioradical is a newly coined word which encompasses paramagnetic species in biological systems, such as active oxygen radicals and transition metal ions. Research on the structure and function of bioradicals has been attrac ting growing attention in the field of biological science, and comprehensive investigations from many fields are helping to understand the real features of these species. ESR spectroscopy also has interdisciplinary features in that its techniques have been applied to many fields, ranging from physics to medicine. It was our hope, therefore, that this book would help to clarify many aspects of bioradicals and that significant progress would be achieved in combining basic research from many different fields. This book arises from the First International Conference on Bioradicals Detected by ESR Spectroscopy (ICBES), which was held in Yamagata, a city in the Yamagata Prefecture of Japan, in 1994. About 300 participants from 16 different countries attended this conference, and about 170 papers were presented. This book is a collection of contributions from the conference and also contains eleven chapters selected by the editorial board, based on sugges tions from the members of the international editorial board of ICBES. The Yamagata Technopolis Foundation is developing a biomedical technology for the 21st century based on life science fused with material and physical science. Based on such a techno logy, the Foundation plans to share its fruits all over the world.
